Most of the Milford restaurant spaces that changed hands in 2026 are going to operators who already run a kitchen or counter somewhere else. On the Boston Post Road, the old Plan B building is becoming the 14th Riko's Pizza. The former Boston Market now serves Just Salad bowls. A café chain with six Connecticut locations has signed on at a new development near Sprouts. Downtown, the newest dining room on River Street belongs to an owner who already runs a trattoria in Bridgeport.
That pattern matters for anyone who eats out in Milford. A new tenant that has run restaurants before usually comes with a known menu. It also tends to keep the same hours and service style it uses at its other locations.
The Post Road fills from a menu people already know
Plan B Burger Bar closed at 1638 Boston Post Road on June 14 after opening there in 2011, Patch reported. Less than four months later, CT Insider reported on October 2 that Riko's Pizza is moving into the building. Two permits had been filed for the address in the week before the story ran, and a September feature in FSR magazine said the Milford location was "under construction."
Riko's was founded in Stamford in 2011 and is best known for its bar-style hot oil pie. According to the same CT Insider report, the chain has six corporate-owned and seven franchise-owned locations, from Darien, Fairfield and Westport to Florida, North Carolina and New York. Milford will be number 14. No opening date had been announced as of that report.
The same thing happened a mile or so down the road. Just Salad was open by mid-June at 1460 Boston Post Road, the former Boston Market, and it kept the drive-through and added a patio. The menu has salads, bowls, wraps, smoothies and market plates, according to Patch.
The biggest change on the Post Road is a new retail development planned for 1052 Boston Post Road. Patch reported on August 17 that DORO Marketplace, a bakery and café serving breakfast, lunch, baked goods and coffee, had signed on there as a tenant. DORO already runs locations in West Hartford, Wethersfield, Windsor Locks, Old Saybrook, Plainville and Avon. Its Milford neighbors will include Sprouts Farmers Market, T-Mobile and Hammer & Nails. Sprouts plans to open there in 2027, and DORO has not announced an opening date.
Even the smallest Post Road opening follows the pattern. Get Fizzy, a soda shop known for mixed drinks like Dr. Pepper with vanilla, coconut cream and lime, opened inside Pilgrim Furniture & Mattress City at 1755 Boston Post Road. It opens on Saturdays and Sundays. The Connecticut Scoop covered its Milford and Plainville openings in the same April post.
| Address | What was there | What's there now or coming | Operator's existing footprint |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1638 Boston Post Rd | Plan B Burger Bar, closed June 14 | Riko's Pizza, opening date not announced | 13 locations in four states |
| 1460 Boston Post Rd | Boston Market | Just Salad, open by June | National fast-casual brand |
| 1052 Boston Post Rd | New development | DORO Marketplace, date not announced | Six Connecticut cafés |
| 1755 Boston Post Rd | Inside Pilgrim Furniture | Get Fizzy, open weekends | Also opened in Plainville |
| 229 Bridgeport Ave | Liberty Rock Tavern | Sidelines Bar & Grill, date not announced | Not reported |
Downtown, the operators come from closer to home
River Street went through the same kind of turnover in 2026, on a smaller scale and with operators from closer by.
Sorrento Cafe & Wine Bar opened in March at 9 River Street, in the space Strega used to occupy. CT Insider reported in April that the menu covers Italian pasta, pizza, salads, and meat and seafood dishes. Owner Pasquale De Martino also owns Trattoria 'A Vucchella in Bridgeport. Like Riko's, Sorrento arrived with an established kitchen behind it, in this case a single restaurant one city over.
A few doors up, Red Eye Coffee Co. had opened at 44 River Street by mid-April, according to The Connecticut Scoop. It serves coffee, espresso, tea and baked goods. CT Insider identified the owner as Brendan Sternbach, who runs the shop with his cousin Melissa Fitzsimmons.
The other big downtown space is getting a non-restaurant tenant. Bistro Basque & El Barrio, the French bistro and Spanish tapas restaurant at 13–17 River Street, had permanently closed by late January, Patch reported. The two halves at 13 and 17 River Street had been combined in 2020. In August, the Stamford Advocate reported that 13 River Street is slated to become Raja Center Yoga Studio, a two-level studio. The report did not name a new food business for 17 River Street.
Taken together, downtown in 2026 traded one large, two-concept restaurant for a wine bar, a coffee shop and a yoga studio.
Short runs show how quickly a space turns over
Some spaces did not last the year. Kaos Restaurant & Bar on Woodmont opened early in 2026 with a menu of pizza, steak, wings, house-made pasta and salads. By June it had closed, Patch reported, about three months after opening, and described it as closed until further notice.
Having other locations doesn't guarantee a long stay. Crumbl Cookies at 1642 Boston Post Road, next door to the old Plan B in Milford Marketplace, closed in June after about three years. Its last business day appears to have been June 13, according to The Connecticut Scoop.
Plan B and Crumbl closed in the same June week, in neighboring units. The 1638 unit already has a new tenant with permits filed. Riko's coming in next door is the best-documented case of how fast a Post Road space can be refilled when an expanding chain is looking for a building.
Milford businesses are expanding outward too
The flow also runs the other way. Some newer Milford businesses are growing beyond their first location.
Wake-Cup Coffee opened its third location at the Milford train station on September 29, 2025. It serves coffee, baked goods and sandwiches on pretzel buns, Patch reported. R&M Cutlet Co. began a soft opening at 575 New Haven Avenue in December 2025. On October 21, 2026, Patch reported that its second location is planned for Orange.
Riko's and DORO are coming to Milford as their next location, and R&M is using Milford as the base for its first expansion. Either way, more of Milford's food businesses are now part of small, multi-location groups.
Still dark, and what to watch for next
Three projects are still waiting on opening dates:
- Riko's Pizza, 1638 Boston Post Road. Two permits were filed in the week before October 2, and an FSR feature in September described the site as under construction. The opening date has not been announced.
- Sidelines Bar & Grill, 229 Bridgeport Avenue. The sports bar is replacing Liberty Rock Tavern. Property co-owner Richard Jurzyk told the CT Post in August that Nicole Durkin would rent the space. The opening date was unknown at the time.
- DORO Marketplace, 1052 Boston Post Road. DORO has signed a lease but hasn't announced a date. Its Milford location doesn't yet appear on the company's website, and Sprouts, which is going into the same development, plans to open in 2027.
The plate glass at 1638 Boston Post Road is the one to keep an eye on this fall. It has a tenant, permits and an active build-out, so it is the closest to opening. DORO's timing depends on the 1052 development, where Sprouts is planning for 2027.
